SCENERY TO "LE DIVAN DU MONDE"

Le Divan du Monde thrives on romantic notions of France. Formerly Le Divan Japonais, this Paris club and concert venue used to be the haunt of seething poet Baudelaire and painter Toulouse-Lautrec. Today, the Divan du Monde is one of the best nightclubs and venues the city has to offer. There I was commissioned to hang a scenery on a unforgettable night: the concerts of Coco Mbassi and Kevin Max. To create that “décor” I mixed some grilles, mirrors, metal doors, drawings and video. In my design, I’ve tried to construct a good ambience beetween visual art, music and the traditional architecture presenting on the stage.

Coco Mbassi is a highly accomplished singer, composer and arranger whose home country is Cameroon. Moving to France, Coco started using her singing talent as a backing singer for some of the well known African music stars: Salif Keita, Toure Kunda, Oumou Sangare and Manu Dibango as well as some international singers like Dee Dee Bridgewater and Demis Roussos. She went on to receive the German Critics Award for her first solo album, Sepia and was nominated in the Newcomer category in the BBC Radio 3 World Music Awards in 2003. Coco describes her music as a tree with African roots and branches that spread to many other places.

Kevin Max showed incredible vocal and musical talent early in his life. Later, at Liberty University, he met Toby McKeehan and Michael Tait. Together they formed dc Talk. The band went on to win four Grammys, 16 Dove Awards, and other recognitions. However, they decided to take an extended "intermission" in 2000. In recent years, Kevin has attempted to create a name for himself apart from dc Talk. He insists, "My music is for a Christian and a Buddhist to pick up and still enjoy, as well as for an atheist. But it is there to prod and ask some questions: What's my worldview? What do I believe in, and why do I believe it?"
