Pelotas Central Square...

I spend a nice week teaching people - from all ages - about Ex-Libris made with woodcut technics. Ex-librīs [Latin, "from the books of..."], is usually a small print or decorative label pasted into a book, often on the inside front cover, to indicate its owner.

...that was placed on a hangar in my home town, Pelotas. This picture was taken from a bridge, so you can see the port and the river. My city is situated in a vast plain called La Pampah that's go down (on the map) till Argentine.

The vernissage happens in a saturday morning. Eighteen artists shared this whole hangar, that was enormous.
I choose to made a larger woodcut - the "Gothic Print" - trying to find some relationship with the building.

'Porto Alegre' means a happy port. It's a nice town located in south of Brazil, with more than one million people. My ehxibition was placed on Gasômetro, a old gas usine that became a nice art center. I receive a large wall to exhibit my woodcuts.

Sometimes I'm invited to paint something as a part of a concert. I like to do this kind of performance: it's a opportunity to share some message with lots of people on the same time. In this occasion I have been in Canguçú, a little town in far south of Brazil, where people don't have access to see art.

Au cours de mes nombreux contacts avec des artistes de partout du monde, le facteur humain m’a toujours semblé quelque chose de positif, d’enrichissant, dépassant l’ intérêt purement professionnel. Ainsi j’ai fait de belles rencontres, trouvé des copains généreux, des amis. Le Facteur Humain, Sylvie et AmiEs, est la réponse de 77 artistes d’origines différentes à mon invitation. Les œuvres sur papier, toutes techniques confondues, 18 X 18 cm, seront présentées en forme de muraille".

June is the month of "Fête de la Musique" in France, so Paris is very full of music! I have been commissioned to hang a backdrop paint in a corner of the XX arrondissement, to decorate the stage of ALHARM, a modern rock band.

The braziliam word 'Favela' means a shanty-town. As the people who lives in Favelas do, I did with my woodcuts: I've found some pieces of wood on the streets to build my matrix which, after printed, was desconstruct it to give birth to another one, so, in this way, I've printed several houses to form a entire Favela.

In this work I use my own body to print, conglomerating my mouvements and weight, what resulted in an image. To film the performing act I invited Cyril Suvenay, a french film-director. So, below the work I put a TV showing the performance.

Performance art can be any situation that involves four basic elements: time, space, the performer's body and a relationship between performer and audience.

“Performance has been a way of appealing directly to a large public, as well as shocking audiences into reassessing their own notions of art and its relation to culture. Conversely, public interest in the medium, especially in the 1980s, stems from an apparent desire of that public to gain access to the art world, to be a spectator of its ritual and its distinct community, and to be surprised by the unexpected, always unorthodox presentations that the artists devise. The work may be presented solo or with a group, with lighting, music or visuals made by the performance artist him or herself, or in collaboration, and performed in places ranging from an art gallery or museum to an “alternative space”, a theatre, café, bar or street corner. Unlike theatre, the performer is the artist, seldom a character like an actor, and the content rarely follows a traditional plot or narrative. The performance might be a series of intimate gestures or large-scale visual theatre, lasting from a few minutes to many hours; it might be performed only once or repeated several times, with or without a prepared script, spontaneously improvised, or rehearsed over many months.”
