Celebrating 20 years of the fall of Berlin wall
By chance, I've found this week on my drawer this old drawing:

Crayon on paper ~ 48 x 68 cm ~ 1998
The Brandenburg Gate is a former city gate and one of the main symbols of Berlin in Germany. It was commissioned by King Frederick William II of Prussia as a sign of peace and built by Carl Gotthard Langhans from 1788 to 1791. Today, it is considered one of Europe's most famous landmarks.

9 paintings ~ diferent sizes ~ acrilic on card
Action painting, sometimes called "gestual abstraction", is a style of painting in which paint is spontaneously dribbled, splashed or smeared onto the canvas, rather than being carefully applied. The resulting work often emphasizes the physical act of painting itself as an essential aspect of the finished work or concern of its artist. So the technique was perfect to dream about the sea...

SCENERY IN PROGRESS

I have been comissioned to make a scenery to a TV talk show. It was a different experience to me, I had to learn about artificial lights, profundity and another camera's effects. It was funny because I had to work when the show was "on the air", so I take some weeks to do the job.

IX BALCONADAS BIENNIAL

Betanzos is a municipality in Galicia, Spain, in the Province of A Coruña. Betanzos was formerly called by its ancient Latin name Brigantium. The town is located in a fertile valley close to the Atlantic Ocean, and it has one of the best preserved old quarters in Galicia. Noteworthy is the Igrexa de San Francisco (St Francis Church), erected in 1387 by order of count Fernán Pérez de Andrade, whose tomb, decorated with hunting scenes, can be seen inside of the church. The Igrexa de Santiago (St Jacques Church), built in the 15th century by the guild of tailors, has a main portal decorated with a horseback statue of Saint Jacques. Other sights in the town are several town palaces, a 16th-century clock tower, and the town walls, which preserve three of their original four gates. There are two celebrations in Betanzos in August each year. At the festival of San Roque, a very large paper balloon is launched. And later in August, decorated boats sail along the river to the nearby Os Caneiros. Each two years, on september, trere are this nice international biennial of paintings where we can apreciate the works hanging in the old balconys.

LES POTEAUX POTES

Instalation ~ 60 cm perimeter x 350 cm ~ print on plastic bubble sheets ~ 2008
When first time I arrived in Pavé d'Orsay, I've seen that, in the center of the exhibition's room, there was two white poles; so, in that moment, I began to work in a concept, trying to integrate them on the exhibition. The two white poles means to me "repetition" and a clean base to show some kind of print. I choose to use the plastic bubble sheets because it is a kind of poor material, it is transparent and have a surface that 'calls' people to touch it. Using a simple cork (take form a good bootle of french wine) and acrilyc paint, I've print two identic targets, one to each pole.

SCENERY TO "LE DIVAN DU MONDE"

Le Divan du Monde thrives on romantic notions of France. Formerly Le Divan Japonais, this Paris club and concert venue used to be the haunt of seething poet Baudelaire and painter Toulouse-Lautrec. Today, the Divan du Monde is one of the best nightclubs and venues the city has to offer. There I was commissioned to hang a scenery on a unforgettable night: the concerts of Coco Mbassi and Kevin Max. To create that “décor” I mixed some grilles, mirrors, metal doors, drawings and video. In my design, I’ve tried to construct a good ambience beetween visual art, music and the traditional architecture presenting on the stage.

Coco Mbassi is a highly accomplished singer, composer and arranger whose home country is Cameroon. Moving to France, Coco started using her singing talent as a backing singer for some of the well known African music stars: Salif Keita, Toure Kunda, Oumou Sangare and Manu Dibango as well as some international singers like Dee Dee Bridgewater and Demis Roussos. She went on to receive the German Critics Award for her first solo album, Sepia and was nominated in the Newcomer category in the BBC Radio 3 World Music Awards in 2003. Coco describes her music as a tree with African roots and branches that spread to many other places.

Kevin Max showed incredible vocal and musical talent early in his life. Later, at Liberty University, he met Toby McKeehan and Michael Tait. Together they formed dc Talk. The band went on to win four Grammys, 16 Dove Awards, and other recognitions. However, they decided to take an extended "intermission" in 2000. In recent years, Kevin has attempted to create a name for himself apart from dc Talk. He insists, "My music is for a Christian and a Buddhist to pick up and still enjoy, as well as for an atheist. But it is there to prod and ask some questions: What's my worldview? What do I believe in, and why do I believe it?"

PAINTER IN ACTION

Sometimes I'm invited to paint something as a part of a concert. I like to do this kind of performance: it's a opportunity to share some message with lots of people on the same time. In this occasion I have been in Canguçú, a little town in far south of Brazil, where people don't have access to see art.

FAVELA, PROCEDURE

Printed with a typographic press in Torben Bo Halbirk's Studio, Paris, France, 2002

Printed with a typographic press in Torben Bo Halbirk's Studio, Paris, France, 2002
The braziliam word 'Favela' means a shanty-town. As the people who lives in Favelas do, I did with my woodcuts: I've found some pieces of wood on the streets to build my matrix which, after printed, was desconstruct it to give birth to another one, so, in this way, I've printed several houses to form a entire Favela.
In this work I use my own body to print, conglomerating my mouvements and weight, what resulted in an image. To film the performing act I invited Cyril Suvenay, a french film-director. So, below the work I put a TV showing the performance.
On the other side of the work I made 1200 prints whit my thumb to draw somethig near to a electrocardiogram's image.

STEALING SHADOWS...

Performance art can be any situation that involves four basic elements: time, space, the performer's body and a relationship between performer and audience.

Performance art can be any situation that involves four basic elements: time, space, the performer's body and a relationship between performer and audience.
“Performance has been a way of appealing directly to a large public, as well as shocking audiences into reassessing their own notions of art and its relation to culture. Conversely, public interest in the medium, especially in the 1980s, stems from an apparent desire of that public to gain access to the art world, to be a spectator of its ritual and its distinct community, and to be surprised by the unexpected, always unorthodox presentations that the artists devise. The work may be presented solo or with a group, with lighting, music or visuals made by the performance artist him or herself, or in collaboration, and performed in places ranging from an art gallery or museum to an “alternative space”, a theatre, café, bar or street corner. Unlike theatre, the performer is the artist, seldom a character like an actor, and the content rarely follows a traditional plot or narrative. The performance might be a series of intimate gestures or large-scale visual theatre, lasting from a few minutes to many hours; it might be performed only once or repeated several times, with or without a prepared script, spontaneously improvised, or rehearsed over many months.”

20 x 500 cm instalation: varnish on book pages, under plexiglass - Paris, France - 2003
I like to make Installation art, because I have the opportunity of use some sculptural materials or other media ( materials used in contemporary insallation art range from everyday and natural materials to new media) to modify the way people experience a particular space (installation art is not necessarily confined to gallery spaces and can be any material intervention in everyday public or private spaces - some installations are site-specific in that they are designed to only exist in the space for which they were created).

I think that drawing is one of the major forms of visual expression within the visual arts. Drawing is often exploratory, with considerable emphasis on observation, problem solving and composition. I like to draw in big sizes using fast movements.

Printmaking is the process of making artworks by printing, normally on paper. The process is capable of producing multiple copies of the same piece, which is called a print. Each copy is known as an impression. Prints are created from a single original surface, known technically as a matrix.

Common types of matrices include: plates of metal, usually copper or zinc for engraving or etching; stone, used for lithography; blocks of wood for woodcuts. Each print is considered an original work of art, not a copy. Works printed from a single plate create an edition, in modern times usually each signed and numbered to form a limited edition.
